India has close to 70 million street dogs. We help humanely manage this population by working with veterinarians, local governments and communities on spay/neuter and promoting peaceful coexistence with street dogs. More than 400,000 dogs have been sterilized and vaccinated through our program since 2013. We’re also fighting to end the cruel dog meat trade in India.
Our India-based disaster response team has saved more than 250,000 animals’ lives since 2018. We assist with preparedness efforts to help communities safely evacuate with their animals before a disaster. When one strikes, we deploy quickly to provide food, water and veterinary treatment.
We helped ban animal testing of cosmetics in India and negotiated rules for pesticides and vaccines that have spared thousands of animals from severe suffering and death in needless testing. We’re working with scientists, businesses and the government to accelerate the development and use of animal-free approaches for testing and research.
We’re teaching rural communities how to avoid conflict with elephants and snakes.
We have worked with law enforcement agencies across India on animal welfare law and provided guidance to entrepreneurs and advocates passionate about improving life for animals in India.
And we’re building a more animal-friendly food system by partnering with universities, hotels and restaurants to boost plant-based options and training future chefs through culinary schools.
There’s more work to be done.
India is home to the second largest number of hens kept for egg production in the world, with almost 100% of its eggs coming from hens in small, wire cages. We have been working in India for over a decade to end intensive cage confinement and improve the lives of more than 461 million egg-laying hens per year.
We’re reaching more and more dogs as we expand our successful sterilization and vaccination program to cities across the country, but too many still are at the risk of harm or cruelty.
We’re active in government offices, schools and neighborhoods, teaching tolerance and responsibility, but animal abuse still occurs.
And we expect the risk of extreme weather crises and other disasters to continue growing.
Join us. Together, we will tackle the root causes of animal cruelty and suffering to create permanent change.
Humane World for Animals. The end of animal cruelty.
