Our impact

We think big—and we’re making big progress in Brazil. With our support, more than 160 companies in Brazil have committed to adopting cage-free and crate-free policies for hens and pregnant pigs. We’re also working with financial institutions to incentivize higher welfare in their investment and lending practices.

It's not enough to save the day. We also have to change the world.

For over 70 years, we’ve been working to create a better world for animals. You’ve known us as the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International. Together with you, we continue our lifesaving work to tackle the root causes of suffering for animals everywhere.

Moving Forward

Beyond reducing the suffering of animals on farms, we’re also helping Brazil shift to a more plant-forward food system. With our partners, we’ve helped municipalities, schools and other institutions transition millions of meals to 100% plant-based. This not only spares hundreds of thousands of animal lives, but also reduces Brazil’s greenhouse gas emissions. In 2024 alone, we worked with partners to transition 29 million meals to fully plant-based, sparing nearly 1.1 million animals a year.

We’ve also made huge strides in ending animal testing. We successfully negotiated major reforms to Brazilian testing requirements for pesticides, including ending a one-year toxicity test on dogs. Since then, the country has also dropped animal test requirements for other products, including veterinary vaccines and school supplies. And in 2023, we celebrated a partial ban on cosmetics animal testing in the country.

There’s more work to be done.

We’re still pushing for a full ban on cosmetics animal testing in Brazil. And Brazilians want one, too: In one poll, 73% of respondents agreed that cosmetics products shouldn’t contain new ingredients tested on animals.

And our work for farmed animals is ongoing. Brazil is one of the top global producers of farmed animals, housing the world’s fifth largest population of egg-laying hens, the fourth largest population of pigs, and the third largest population of broiler chickens. We continue to help companies and producers implement their commitments to animal welfare—while advocating for more institutions to adopt policies that improve animal welfare and incorporate more plants.

Please join us. Together, we will tackle the root causes of animal cruelty and suffering to create permanent change.
