Data Controllers
Humane World and Humane World International work together to ensure your Personal Data is processed to reflect your interests in the global efforts to end animal cruelty. This is achieved, in part, by sharing your Personal Data between both Humane World and Humane World International. For the purposes of data protection laws, Humane World and Humane World International are joint controllers of your Personal Data. This means both entities work together to decide why and how your Personal Data is processed. It also means that we are jointly responsible under the law for that processing. Please visit or browse the Website or our social media pages to learn more about how we work together.
Humane World Europe is the data controller of the Personal Data processed for purposes under GDPR (which applies across the EU member states) and the Law of 30 July 2018 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of Personal Data, a Belgian law which supplements GDPR and extends its application in Belgium. We use EU 2021 Standard Contractual Clauses for transfers of Personal Data between our EU and US affiliates, where appropriate, which require the US affiliate to protect the Personal Data of individuals in the European Economic Area (EEA) in accordance with applicable data protection laws.
For the UK, Humane World UK is the data controller of the Personal Data processed for purposes under the Data Protection Act 2018 (the “DPA”) and the UK General Data Protection Regulation. We use UK Standard Contractual Clauses/International Data Transfer Agreements for the transfer of Personal Data between our UK and US affiliates.
WHAT IS THE SCOPE OF THE POLICY
This Policy applies to the Personal Data we process whenever you interact with Humane World for Animals, including when you visit or browse our Website, any associated subdomain, advertising, our social media pages, or otherwise interact with us.
WHY WE COLLECT YOUR PERSONAL DATA
Our Website collects certain usage data to understand better how visitors use our Website, which includes your IP address, geolocation (i.e., the physical location of your device), URL you are coming from before visiting the Website, web browser and browsing data, browser type, device type, the fact that you are visiting our Website or clicking on our content, length of Website visit, number of page views, and other Personal Data that allows us to measure user activity and engagement. The Website logs these IP addresses, geolocation, URLs, device data such as identifier, name, and type of operating system, mobile network data, and web data such as browser type and pages accessed on the Website and aggregates them for system administration and to monitor the use of our Website. We use the fully aggregated data to measure the number of visits to our Website, the average time spent on our site, the number of pages viewed, and various other site statistics. This monitoring helps us provide a more useful and engaging online experience to Website visitors and helps us improve the quality of our content.
WE RELY ON YOUR CONSENT
Where applicable law requires it, we will rely on consent as a basis for processing Personal Data, and we will specifically obtain your consent while collecting your Personal Data on our Website.
WAYS WE USE YOUR PERSONAL DATA
The laws on data protection provide various reasons (i.e., legal allowances) for organizations to collect and otherwise process your Personal Data. We generally process Personal Data on the basis that it is necessary for the pursuit of our legitimate interests. We process data to pursue our legitimate interests in ways that might reasonably be expected and that do not materially impact your rights, freedom, or interests.
Marketing
We may send marketing materials to keep our supporters updated on Humane World for Animals’ projects, activities, news, and action alerts and to identify supporters and donors who may have an interest in and financial ability to support Humane World for Animals and particular aspects of our work. We will provide opt-outs for you in the marketing materials, or you may contact us directly with your opt-out request as provided in this Policy.
With your freely given and always revocable consent, we may upload your voluntarily provided information, such as your name, email address, city, zip postal code, and telephone number into third-party platforms that have provided us with assurances that they process your Personal Data under suitable data protection arrangements and security controls, in order to serve content-specific advertisements through these third-party platforms.
We currently participate in Facebook/Meta’s “Custom Audiences” and “Lookalike Audiences” as such third-party platforms, which enable us to display advertisements to our existing or potential supporters via Facebook/Meta or to suppress certain Humane World advertisements from our existing supporters’ Facebook/Meta feeds (e.g., an advertisement directed at signing a petition when you have already signed it). For this purpose, we provide the supporter's name, email address, city, zip postal code, and telephone number to Facebook/Meta to enable Facebook/Meta to determine if you are a registered account holder with Facebook/Meta. Your data sets are sent to Facebook/Meta in an encrypted format that are deleted by Facebook/Meta if the data set does not match with a Facebook/Meta account.
Before any of these data sets is uploaded by Facebook/Meta for the matching process, the information is hashed. Hashing is a type of cryptographic security method that turns your identifiers into randomized code and cannot be reversed. The hashed customer information, whether matched or not, is deleted by Facebook/Meta promptly after the match process is complete. We understand that hashing is not anonymization. While it provides an additional layer of data security, we implement other safeguards and measures to ensure your data is protected and handled responsibly. For more information how we protect your data, please see the section below on How We Keep Your Data Secure [hyperlink].
Depending on your settings, our advertisements may appear when you access Facebook/Meta, your Facebook/Meta feed, and other third-party websites and applications.
In Germany, prospects' email addresses are stored temporarily, and they receive a double opt-in before they are stored longer. Double opt-in occurs when a user signs up for an email marketing list, and then an email is sent out to the user, which includes a link to click on and confirm the subscription. Only after the confirmation click is completed will the user officially be added to the email marketing list.
In the EU and UK, opt-ins are needed for email/SMS and telephone requests.
Your Preferences
We will process the Personal Data you voluntarily provided to contact you regarding animal protection-related issues we feel you may be interested in, to keep you updated regarding Humane World for Animals’ programs, to extend an invitation to you to support our programs, to sign you up for our news or action alerts, to contact you via email, SMS, or post, and to enforce our Website terms and conditions. We may also send such data to the people whose e-mail addresses you provide when forwarding Humane World for Animals electronic content. When we do so, our sole intent is to enlarge our family of informed animal advocates and organizational supporters.
Every recipient of our electronic communications can quickly and easily “opt-out” of future communications by following the instructions in any communication we send or by contacting us directly.
Wealth Screening
We may collect data about you from publicly available sources to help us understand more about you as an individual and your ability to provide financial support for our charitable programs and activities, including carrying out wealth screenings, a process that uses trusted third-party partners to automate some of this work. We may use data gathered from public sources alongside the data you provide to analyze who might be willing to support Humane World for Animals financially and to understand the preferences of our supporters about events, communication, and services. By doing this, we can focus conversations we have with you about fundraising in the most effective way and ensure that we provide you with an experience as a donor or potential donor that is appropriate for you. If you do not wish Humane World for Animals to undertake this type of processing activity of your Personal Data, please contact us.

Cookies may store unique identifiers, user preferences, and other data. A tracking pixel generally works like a cookie, but it is not stored on the user’s device. Instead, pixels are embedded in a website, email or ad. Through such technologies, we, or a third-party, may gather data about you, such as your browser type, operating system, IP address, mobile device identification number, the sites visited before and after our Website, and your interactions with our services, such as the time and date when you viewed a page, which advertisements you have re-clicked on, and whether you filled out an online form.

- Analytical or performance cookies allow us to recognize and count the number of visitors and see how visitors move around our Website. This helps us improve how our Website works, for example, by ensuring that users find what they are looking for easily.
- Functionality cookies are used to recognize you when you return to our Website. This enables us to personalize our content for you, greet you by name, and remember your preferences (for example, your choice of language or region).
- Targeting or advertisement cookies record your visit to our Website, the pages you have visited, and the links you have followed. We use this data to make our Website and its advertising more relevant to your interests. We may also share this data with third parties for this purpose or allow the third party to collect this data as disclosed in the Cookie Chart below:

Facebook/Meta. We use marketing pixels from the service provider Facebook/Meta (Facebook/Meta Ireland Limited, 4 Grand Canal Square, Dublin 2, Ireland; “Facebook/Meta”) on our Website. We implemented a code (pixel) for the service on our Website. This pixel is a snippet of JavaScript code that loads a collection of functions allowing Facebook/Meta to track your user actions if you visit our Website via Facebook/Meta ads. These tools enable Facebook/Meta to match your user data (customer data such as IP address and user ID) with the data of your Facebook/Meta account. Facebook/Meta then deletes this data. The collected data is anonymous and cannot be viewed by us; it is only used for advertising purposes. If you are a Facebook/Meta user and are logged in to your account there, your visit to our Website is automatically assigned to your Facebook/Meta user account. For more information on the collection and use of the data by Facebook/Meta, as well as on your rights and possibilities for the protection of your privacy in this regard, please refer to the Facebook/Meta Business page about Custom Audiences, Custom audience privacy information, and to the privacy notices of Facebook/Meta at https://www.Facebook/Meta.com/about/privacy/
Wisepops: Wisepops is an on-site marketing solution that lets us display targeted campaigns such as popups and notifications to website visitors. These campaigns can be subscriptions to newsletters, promotions, and advocacy alerts. For internal targeting purposes, we collect specific details about your browsing history on websites where Wisepops has been implemented. This data helps us determine if you match a particular display scenario set by the website owner. The details include your last visit to the website and the campaigns you have interacted with. This browsing data is stored in a cookie on your computer, which expires after 2 years. It allows us to not repeat the same message to you. The data is not stored on our servers or anywhere else, and it cannot be accessed by other applications or used to track you across different websites. For more data on the collection and use of the data by Wisepops, please refer to the privacy notices at https://support.wisepops.com/article/chyhkm9j7z-data-and-cookie-policy#our_data_security_policy and https://support.wisepops.com/article/mp2ypya1np-information-concerning-cookies
TikTok: We use marketing pixels from the service provider TikTok on our Website. This pixel collects functions allowing TikTok to track your actions on our Website if you interact with it after viewing a TikTok ad. The pixel enables TikTok to match your user data (such as IP address, device information, and user ID) with the data associated with your TikTok account. TikTok processes this data to generate reports and insights for us, but we do not have access to individual user data. The information collected remains anonymous to us and is solely used to measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns. If you are logged into your TikTok account, your visit to our Website may be associated with your TikTok profile. For more details about TikTok's data collection and usage, as well as your rights and options for privacy protection, please refer to TikTok's privacy policy at https://www.tiktok.com/legal/privacy-policy.
MNTN: We use marketing pixels from the Connected Television (TV) service provider MNTN on our website. The pixels track your actions on our Website if you interact with it after viewing a Connected TV ad. The pixels enable MNTN to match your user data (such as IP address and device information) with pages you’ve visited on our website and conversion activity (if you have made a donation, signed a petition, etc.) to measure the effectiveness of our advertising campaigns. The data collected by MNTN is non-personally identifiable (PII) based on anonymous user interactions with our Website. MNTN collects data only as it pertains to the ability to serve an ad to said user (unique user ID or IP address), and outside of that collection for a business purpose, no other PII is collected. For more details about MNTN’s data collection and usage, as well as your rights and options for privacy protection, please refer to MNTN's privacy policy at https://mountain.com/privacy-policy/.
