On March 7th and 8th, 2023, Humane Society International/Korea will close down a legally registered dog meat farm in Chungcheong province and rescue almost 200 dogs and puppies, after the farmer Mr Yang joined our Models for Change program to leave this dying industry for good and start vegetable farming instead. Media are invited to join us (transport provided from/to Seoul). Tour the dog farm to witness the conditions, and see HSI/Korea and global rescuers remove dogs and load them on a truck headed to Incheon airport. Dogs will fly to the United States (JFK), from where some will go on to Canada to begin their adoption journeys.

DATE: Media may join us either Tuesday 7th or Wednesday 8th March 2023.
TIME: HSI’s media minibus leaves the LOTTE City Hotel, Myeongdong in Seoul at 5.30am, returning to Seoul at approximately 11am, depending on traffic.
WHERE: The farm is located in Asan-si, in South Chungcheong Province and is legally registered under the Enforcement Decree of The Wastes Control Act / Act on the Management and Use of Livestock Excreta.
WHO: HSI/Korea’s end dog meat campaign manager Sangkyung Lee and government affairs director Borami Seo will be available for interview (fluent Korean and English) in addition to HSI’s global team. The dog farmer, Mr Yang, has also agreed to be interviewed.
ABOUT THE FARMER: Mr Yang is 73 years old and has bred dogs for meat for 27 years but decided to retire from dog farming with HSI/Korea’s help because of his age and because he believes there is no future in dog meat, so he wants to get out. He is considering to start vegetable farming on his property. He has signed a contract with HSI to hand over the dogs and never to farm dogs or other animals again, and will receive a one-off grant to enable his transition to an alternative livelihood.
